What it does, what stays on your device, and what is still to come.
- What is FlowRead?
- FlowRead is a local-first PDF reader with a built-in AI reading assistant. You select any passage while reading and tap Define, Translate or Explain, and the answer appears over the page instead of sending you to another app. It is being built for iOS and Android.
- Does FlowRead upload my PDFs?
- No. Your PDFs stay on your device and are never uploaded as a matter of course. When you ask for a definition or an explanation, only the passage you selected and a small amount of surrounding context is sent to generate the answer — not the file. Features that would need the whole document are opt-in.
- How is FlowRead different from ChatPDF?
- ChatPDF uploads and indexes your entire document so you can ask questions about any part of it. FlowRead is a reader first: it keeps the file on your device and only sends the passage you highlight. That means it cannot summarise a chapter you have not read, but it also means your document never leaves your phone.
- Will FlowRead work offline?
- Your library, PDFs, reading position, highlights and notes are stored on your device rather than in an account, so none of that depends on a connection or on us. Fully offline reading is not finished yet: the reader currently loads its rendering engine over the network when you open a document. AI lookups always need a connection, because the model answering them runs on a server.
- What happens to my highlights if I move or delete the PDF?
- They survive. FlowRead identifies documents by their content rather than their file path, so if a PDF is moved or renamed it can be relinked and your highlights, notes and reading progress come back with it. If the file is gone for good, your notes are kept rather than silently deleted.
- When does FlowRead ship?
- It is being built for iOS and Android and does not have a public release date yet. Joining the waitlist is the way to hear first when it is ready.
